My recently (13 days) adopted doge, has had to be returned to the County animal shelter system for assessment and eventual euthanization.
Sadly, the first dog that I have bonded with since my childhood Chow-Chow, did not respond well to training with the wife, former working dog/police dog trainer, or myself. We gave him multiple chances after serious aggressive outbursts, but yesterday morning was the final straw. He continually challenged my wife aggressively for dominance in our pack and even after really following the trainers guidance and working hard with the dog, he attacked my wife during his breakfast feeding time.
We had been crate training the former shelter pet in order to get him comfortable with being in the crate during the weekdays while the wife and I work. We don't lock him up we simply placed his food bowl in his crate and after he has been exercised first thing in the morning and also after following a few simple commands (sit, stay, down, heel) he is then commanded to eat. Unfortunately, our other dog of 5 years, a Chihuahua, is EXTREMELY food motivated and will stop at nothing to eat something, anything. When my wife told our new dog, "Good boy, okay, go eat your breakfast." The chihuahua took off for the food bowl in the crate. My wife then attempted to prevent and retrieve the chihuahua before he got to the new dogs food. It was at this very moment that the new dog lunged and attacked my wife.
But for the grace of God, and optometrists, her glasses saved her eyes and face from the bites he attempted on her face; but he did retract and lunge again at her chest and arm. I was in the adjoining bathroom and hearing the commotion burst through the door and grabbed a hold of the dog removing him from my wife's person. He continued to snarl and growl and bark while I maintained an extremely firm grip on his neck and choke collar chain. My wife in response to physical trauma was so scared and close to slipping into shock she ran for the closet in the same room. I instructed her to get out of the room, and also forcibly removed the Chihuahua from the dog bowl in the crate and put the new dog in the crate, locked him inside, and sought after my wife to administer first aid.
I applied ice packs to keep her from blacking out and slipping into pain and fear induced shock. I then called my mother-in-law who lives very nearby and we took my wife to the ER. Graciously, she needed no stitches or surgeries, but she did have multiple (more than 10) punctures and deep scratches. We had them cleaned and received her medicine and I took her home to rest.
Thankfully, my wife has a very strong spirit and she will recover soon and eventually want another dog in the house but it will take a very long time for her to trust any other animals ever again.
Reflecting on this chain of events, I can't help but shame myself as the protector of my family and home for bringing a dangerous and aggressive dog into our home. I will constantly wonder why this happened and be distraught over the fact that this dog simply did not comprehend how great his life was going to be with us.
Oppo, I could use some cheering up. I'm not sure what I need but it's been a really tough 30 odd hours.
Also, sad that TG is in very dire straits.

Sorry to hear this. What kinda dog was it?
For the record, I'm not a fan of leaving dogs in crates for long periods of time. They should have room to move around and not be confined to a small area, as that can result in other problems long term. Just like a person sitting at their desk all day.

Tough situation, but it sounds like you acted admirably to help protect your wife and other dog yesterday morning. Glad to hear there were no major injuries, and I hope everything goes well moving forward. Here's a Land Rover on tracks to lift your spirits:

I'm sorry to hear about this man. I understand your stance but don't beat yourself up, it's always a gamble bringing in a new pet (particularly when you aren't the first owner) unfortunately this time the dog wasn't the one.
I don't know if it'll cheer you up but I saw a 2cv van with seats in and a comedy sticker reading "no cheese, baguette, or wine left in vehicle overnight" and I took some pics which I'll put on a DOTS post shortly.

Man, that sucks. I've dealt with aggressive dogs. I'm sorry about that. I hope your wife is alright. Dogs are great companions, but they can be very dangerous. I had a dog (kinda still do, the guy we're renting the lower half of our house to is keeping her, but I go visit her) who was quite food-aggressive. Trying to keep an 85lb wolf hybrid dog from biting you is often a fruitless effort, as my fiancee and I both had wounds to prove. We tried training her as well, everything we could do, but keeping her in the house with us and our (not-quite) 3 year old daughter just wasn't safe. I loved that dog, and for the most part she was really friendly, but when she got aggressive, it was downright scary, but we just couldn't keep her with children around. Luckily, it worked out for all parties involved.
I'm very sorry about your dog, man. It takes a lot of guts to accept something like this, rather than just ignoring the problem. Eventually, you will get another dog, who won't have any aggression issues. I feel for you.

We only have him crated for 3-4 hours before breaks during the workdays. We live in a two bedrrom apartment, currently and as he was a newly adopted shelter animal training is tantamount to happy and successful life as a family dog. (Gee, that turned out great for us didn't it)
According to the county shelter he was:
A. Around 5 years old. (According to our Vet's assessment he was <2 years old, I trust my vet)
B. An Australian Shepherd - Border Collie mix (Again according to our vet and trainer, he was more likely a Border Collie - Pit Bull mix)
To clarify so I do not make a repeated mistake if we ever get another dog, how long is a "long period of time" in your opinion?

Hope the Mrs is OK. Sounds like you did everything you could.
If that happened in my house, I'm not sure a trip to the shelter for eventual euthanization would have been required.

After a great many years of being born for and conducting violence, the last 2 years of separation from that lifestyle have changed my position on killing.
Also, I live in a city and to have done something like that with the medical history I have, I would in serious trouble with the law and other figures.

That's too bad. My childhood dog had to be put down about a year ago (fortunately only due to old age/declining health). It's rough.
I see you like Rovers, so have one saying "screw you" to some water.

I knew I was dump napalm on the fire with that post on the Clarkson story, but it's been so much fun replying to all the hate with super cheery, enthusiastic replies.
I almost feel bad. Almost.

It takes a lot of work to rehab (sometimes years) a seriously aggressive dog. We've done it a number of times because my wife is a bleeding heart and grows strange attachments. My philosophy is that there are plenty of non-aggressive dogs out there euthanized every year due to space constraints and that attempting to rehab an aggressive one is personal so there's no shame in determining that it is not for you and yours.

Sorry to hear that, man. I hope your wife's recovery is speedy, though the emotional will likely be harder than the physical. Don't beat yourself up over not being there to stop it immediately. It sounds like she, as well as you, are quite competent with dogs and it was one of those freak incidents.
I'm saddened to hear that the doge wouldn't respond to training and will likely be euthanized, but it's probably for the best. I hope you are able to find a new member to your furry family in the future that will fit well. I admire your attempts to give an animal in need a better life and hate that it turned out this way.
Have a kitted out Defender to brighten your day!

Dude, you tried and that is a very, very noble thing to attempt. Do NOT feel bad; you've taken it as far as you reasonably can - probably much farther than most would have.

I'm very sorry to read this, my friend...
I'm glad the damages weren't any worse than they were. You've made the right decision, as much as it sucks, and I hope your wife's wounds and both of your hearts heal quickly.
I have a good friend who went through the same thing with their adopted dog (due to attacks on visitors to their home). Their dog had become like a child to them, so it was a terribly hard decision. Sadly, some creatures we come in contact with in our lives are too broken to be fixed...

First of all, glad to hear the Mrs. is okay. It's tough adopting and training a dominant/aggressive dog like that. I commend you for sticking with it but for the safety of your family, it just didn't work out.
Adopting a shelter animal can be the greatest thing you do for yourselves and that animal. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you this time. One of our dogs and our cat are shelter rescues and they are phenomenal. I have confidence that you will find that perfect rescue who will love you unconditionally for saving him/her.
